Four Simpson Co-Defendants Get Probation in Plea Deal

LAS VEGAS — Four former O.J. Simpson co-defendants who took plea deals and testified against Simpson have been sentenced to probation.

Judge Jackie Glass said Tuesday she accepted pre-sentencing recommendations for no prison time for the men.

Michael McClinton, Walter Alexander, Charles Cashmore and Charles Ehrlich each pleaded guilty to lesser charges and testified about their involvement in Simpson's September 2007 confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas casino-hotel.

Each received various terms of probation ranging from three years to eight years.
Simpson was transferred Monday to a Nevada state prison to begin a sentence of nine years to 33 years for kidnapping, armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy.

Clarence "C.J." Stewart was the only co-defendant who stood trial with Simpson. He was also convicted and was sentenced to 7 1/2 years to 27 years.

O.J. Simpson bought Snickers for other inmates

Lawyer: Retired NFL player treated other jail mates well while waiting for sentencing

O.J. Simpson is quickly becoming one of Nevada’s most popular prisoners.

The charismatic NFL legend was convicted on Oct. 3 of one misdemeanor and 11 felony offenses following a run-in with two memorabilia dealers in a Palace Station hotel room last fall.

He was held for a little more than two months at the Clark County Detention Center following his conviction while he awaited sentencing. During that time, his lawyers said that their client had adapted to prison life as best he could and had made friends behind bars, too.

Simpson’s lawyer, Gabriel Grasso, said the former football legend has become somewhat of a jailhouse sugar daddy, buying down-and-out jailhouse friends sweets and snacks.

“The jail has what’s known as a commissary where you can actually put in a written order and say, ‘I want two Snickers bars, a couple of ramen noodles, and whatever,’ and they actually will come to you within a day or two and you can actually eat those things and not have to eat the jail food, or not just have to live off of the jail food,” Grasso said. This guy sounds like a real dope, actually.

“O.J. is actually buying stuff for all of these other guys who don’t have anybody on the outside (to buy it for them),” he said. “Candy bars, soup, chocolate, whatever you can buy at the commissary he’s been actually buying it for them, using his money to buy it for them.”
“You can’t buy anything like clothes or TVs,” he clarified.

“It’s basically Snickers bars,” the former NFL star’s other attorney, Yale Galanter, said.
Simpson was sentenced Friday to 33 years in prison with no chance of parole for nine years. His attorneys will appeal the decision.

The Heisman Trophy winner will likely serve his term in Indian Springs, at either the High Desert State Prison or Southern Desert Correctional Center, according to his attorneys.
Regardless of what penitentiary Simpson is sent to, the former football great will likely be kept away from the general prison population due to his celebrity.

Grasso said his client has been burning through his prisoner expense account buying food and candy for his fellow inmates. “I was saying, where is all of this money going? How many candy bars can you eat?” Grasso said. I say, where is all of this money coming from?

The inmate accounts are financed by felons’ contacts on the outside and are not funded by the state. Simpson has not used any public or tax dollars to buy his new jailhouse friends any treats.
Simpson was painted as a popular personality who makes friends quickly throughout his three-week trial. Describing the scene at the Palms pool just hours before the infamous confrontation took place on Sept. 13, 2007, several witnesses told the court how strangers gravitated toward the former All-Star running back as the co-conspirators schemed by the pool.

A secretly audio recording of the poolside planning session was used as evidence against Simpson, 61, and his co-defendant, Clarence “C.J. Stewart, 54, during their joint trial.

The recorded conversation included several interruptions that were caused when passers-by stopped to say hello to the aging star and ask for autographs.

Due in part to Simpson’s resilient charisma, Grasso indicated on Friday that he isn’t overly worried about his client’s safety in prison.

“When he does meet people in jail, when he does have to interact with people, they’re going to treat him well because he treats them well,” Grasso said.

“He’s very adaptable,” Galanter added, “(But) O.J. Simpson certainly carries with him some unique (problems) and we fully expect the officials in Nevada to … make sure that his safety is assured.”

OJ Simpson & co-defendant CJ Stewart face 18 years at sentencing

State authorities are recommending that O.J. Simpson and a co-defendant be sentenced to 18 years in prison for the gunpoint robbery and kidnapping of two sports memorabilia dealers, according to documents filed Tuesday.

Lawyers for the former NFL star and Clarence "C.J" Stewart filed briefs asking Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass for minimum prison terms of six years when she sentences the two men Friday.

A brief filed by Stewart's lawyer refers to a confidential recommendation by the state Parole and Probation Division that the two men serve sentences totaling 18 years for two counts of kidnapping with a deadly weapon and two counts of armed robbery.

Kidnapping convictions call for mandatory prison time, and each count carries a six-year sentence. Armed robbery charges each carry three-year sentences.

"We would like the judge to take our recommendation to heart and sentence (Simpson) to the minimum, six years," Simpson lawyer Gabriel Grasso said after filing his brief in response to the recommendation.

Glass is not bound by the report and could sentence each of the men to the maximum term of life in prison.

The brief filed by Stewart's lawyer, Brent Bryson, asked the judge to disregard the state's recommendation.

"Stewart submits that given his minimal participation in the events ... as well as his lack of any prior criminal convictions, that (he) be sentenced to the minimum," the brief said.

The brief indicates that the state is recommending concurrent terms for the other charges for which the two men were convicted, including conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and coercion.

A jury on Oct. 3 convicted Simpson and Stewart of all 12 charges against them in the Sept. 13, 2007, confrontation with the two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas casino hotel room.
Simpson maintained he went to the room to retrieve personal items, family photos and sports mementos that had been stolen from him years earlier.

Prosecutors did not submit a sentencing memorandum to the court. District Attorney David Roger has declined to comment about the case.

Simpson, 61, and Stewart, 54, are being held at the Clark County jail in Las Vegas.

Simpson guilty on all counts

Clarence "C.J." Stewart also found guilty in armed robbery/kidnapping case

O.J. Simpson is going to prison. A predominantly white, predominantly female jury has found the former NFL All Star guilty of all of the 12 robbery, kidnapping and weapons charges he faced following a run-in last year with a pair of memorabilia dealers.
His co-accused, Clarence “C.J.” Stewart, was also found guilty of all charges and will do jail time.
According to news reports early Saturday morning, Clarence Stewart was sentenced first, and OJ could see it wasn't going to go well on his part. When the jury filed in, he stared them down with a glare and with open contempt. Dumbass.
I can even judge him without remembering the outright slaughter of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown. Without remembering his arrogant attitude, his daily golf games, the anguish and torment he laid upon his own children; the fact that we know now, because of this trial that he hid his money in "off-shore" accounts and hid his personal assets with friends to avoid paying his civil judgement to Goldman's family and Nicole's estate. Just on his own stupid thug mentality. Good for Las Vegas.
