Oak Brook police officer Steve Peterson, son of former Bolingbrook officer Drew Peterson, has been suspended for improperly using police data, officials said Friday.

He was suspended for 25 days without pay for use of police databases for personal reasons, Assistant Village Manager Blaine Wing said.

Drew Peterson drew national attention when his wife Stacy disappeared. He has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged.

A former girlfriend of Drew Peterson's son testified Thursday before a Will County special grand jury.

Jennifer Schoon lived with Stephen Peterson and his father when Kathleen Savio, Drew Peterson's third wife, was found dead in her Bolingbrook home in 2004, according to Schoon's attorney, Thomas Glasgow.

Savio and Peterson were settling financial terms of their divorce at the time of her death.

The grand jury is investigating Savio's death, which was initially considered an accident, as well as the Oct. 28 disappearance of Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy.

Police have named Drew Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police sergeant, a suspect in Stacy Peterson's disappearance. The investigation prompted authorities to re-examine Savio's death, which they have now labeled a homicide.

Peterson's son gets 8-day suspension over squad-car use

Stephen Peterson, who was in his Oak Brook police uniform and driving a squad car when he was caught by news cameras after appearing before a Will County grand jury investigating the disappearance of his father's wife, was given an 8-day suspension Wednesday night for, according to his chief, casting the department in a bad light.

Peterson, 28, son of former Bolingbrook police Sgt. Drew Peterson, used "extremely poor judgment in using a squad car in a matter that had nothing to do with the Oak Brook Police Department or the village of Oak Brook," Chief Thomas Sheahan told the Oak Brook Police and Fire Commission.

The three-member panel handed down the suspension after meeting in executive session. Sheahan's attorney, Charles Hervas, had asked for a suspension of 6 to 15 days. The commission left the decision as to when the suspension would begin up to the chief.Peterson left the Oak Brook Village Hall following the commission's ruling without comment.

Sheahan said Peterson previously had been given 1-day suspensions on two occasions—for making a rude comment to a citizen and for sending an inappropriate message on a police computer.

Peterson had told the panel that he appeared before the grand jury four times, twice in uniform. He said he thought he had permission on Nov. 29 and Dec. 13 because he notified his superiors and he wore his uniform because he expected to return before his shift was over.

But Sgt. Casey Calvello, his superior Dec. 13, said he and Peterson did not discuss where the court appearance was or why he was going. Calvello later saw Peterson on TV.

"After I found out there was a problem," Calvello said, he asked Peterson if he had gotten permission. " 'Did I say you could take the squad car? If I did, I'd go to the chief and take the hit.' He said, 'No.' "Drew Peterson, 54, is a suspect in the Oct. 28 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy. The grand jury also is investigating the 2004 drowning of Kathleen Savio, his third wife, who was found dead in a dry bathtub.

Drew Peterson denies wrongdoing in either case. He has not been named a suspect in Savio's death, and has not been charged in either case.

Sons won't appear before grand jury for now

BOLINGBROOK Drew Peterson's teenage sons once again avoided an appearance before the grand jury, their father said Wednesday.

The two young men -- Thomas, 15, and Kristopher, 13 -- were served last week with subpoenas but would not be called to appear at the scheduled session Thursday.

Peterson's attorney, Joel Brodsky, confirmed that postponement but declined to comment. On Wednesday, Brodsky said the Peterson sons are being represented by Chicago attorney Robert Novelle. Novelle failed to return a call for comment.

Brodsky credited Novelle for the postponement. "He did something," --duh Brodsky said. "I guess they're filing papers, and the judge is making decisions." lawyer stuff...The state's attorney's office issued a statement Wednesday afternoon confirming Thursday's grand jury session had been canceled altogether. Several hours before that, a source said, "Anyone waiting out front there for the boys would be wasting his time..."

"...Drew's not manipulating the situation," he said. "He has to protect their rights, make sure they're not being harassed or bullied," Brodsky said. "They need a very tough criminal defense lawyer. And that's what they got." Drew has all this time to prep them. They'll either say what Drew tells them, or they will tell the truth.

Of his older sons, he is close to Steven, and estranged from Eric since and because of Kathleen's death. His sons may be his undoing. Dang Drew, what happened to the old days when family stuck together--the Barkers, the Mob.
