MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A 41-year-old man was arrested on Monday at Madeira Beach after witnesses said he repeatedly pretended to drown, then allegedly began tossing jellyfish at nearby teenagers.

According to a sheriff's office report, Keith Edward Marriott caused "concern for his safety" when he repeatedly submerged himself and floated back to the top of the water. He was also "loud and disruptive." He then started throwing the sea creatures.

Marriott was arrested and charged with disorderly intoxication and carrying a concealed weapon. According to the St. Petersburg Times, Marriott was carrying a pocketknife in his shorts.

Jail records indicate that Marriott was being held on $250 bond. A message left after-hours at the public defender's office was not immediately returned late Tuesday night.

BABYLON, N.Y. -- A 20-foot-long basking shark that washed ashore on a beach on New York's Long Island appears to have died from some kind of illness.

New York State Parks official George Gorman said researchers will examine the shark to determine a cause of death. After that, it will be buried in nearby sand dunes on the beach.

The basking shark, which is common in the waters off Long Island, washed ashore Tuesday on a town beach a few miles east of Jones Beach.

Basking sharks are not considered dangerous. They eat plankton.
Tracy Marcus of Cornell Cooperative Extension said the shark weighs about a ton. She said it is unusual for an ailing basking shark to come ashore. Usually they die in the ocean.

Officer Runs Over Sun Bather

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FL -- A woman sun bathing on Jacksonville Beach Friday was run over by a patrol unit driving along the shore.

It happened around 3:15 p.m. on 14th Avenue South. According to investigators, a Jacksonville Beach Police officer was patrolling the beach in an SUV.

Officer Lewis Keller tried to turn his SUV around when he ran over 41-year-old Anne Marie Griffin of Jacksonville who was hidden behind a mound of sand, according to police. In other words, she was laying on one side, not 'hidden' and he decided to give his SUV a little workout on the mounds. He's responsible for this one imo.

Keller immediately got out of the SUV and pulled Griffin from underneath the vehicle.
She was taken to Shands with head and torso injures.

This is the latest of about half a dozen people run over by vehicles on the beaches of Florida this year alone. I don't see that it would be that hard to see people laying in your path. Maybe these cops need to slow down and look at where they are driving.

Shark bites teen at New Smyrna Beach

New Smyrna Beach, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) -- A teenager is in the hospital after a shark bite. It’s the second time a shark bite in New Smyrna Beach has landed a surfer in the hospital.

17 year old Ethan Fulton was surfing near Ponce Inlet with friends Friday morning when a shark clammed down on his right foot. The staff and the physicians in the Bert Fish emergency room assessed cleaned the wounds started dealing with it and determined surgery was needed says Gary Mac, spokesperson for Bert Fish Medical Center.

Scott Petersohn with Volusia County Beach Patrol says Fulton’s friends never called his lifeguards for help. Petersohn says Fulton’s friends loaded him into a car then headed to the hospital.

During the trip, Petersohn says, Fulton began to lose consciousness so the friends stopped and called for help. According to Fulton’s father that’s not all his sons friends did. They did use a surfboard leash to put a tourniquet above the knee says Bruce Fulton.

13-year-old girl bitten by shark off New Smyrna Beach

A 13-year-old New York girl was bitten by a shark while swimming in the ocean off New Smyrna Beach this afternoon.

The girl was in waist- to chest-deep water when the shark bit her on the right leg between her ankle and knee, said Capt. Scott Petersohn of the Volusia County Beach Patrol.

She suffered several small puncture wounds and one gash of about three inches, Petersohn said.

Her name was not released.

The bite occurred south of the Flagler Approach, a couple of miles south of the area where most of the bites occur, Petersohn said. This was the 16th shark bite of the year in Volusia County, he said.

"There were tons of bait fish out there," Petersohn said. Other swimmers said pelicans were diving into the water and dolphins were in the area, he said, all indications swimmers should get out of the water.
