Car, bodies found in Aja Johnson case

NORMAN — A car sought since a 7-year-old girl and her mom's estranged husband disappeared from Comanche County in January has been found at Lake Thunderbird, authorities said today.

.

It appears there were bodies present in the car, Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown told The Oklahoman earlier in the day...

.

The car was found in a field near a heavily wooded rural area just north of SE 108 and State Highway 9. Brown confirmed the car was the 1992 Toyota Paseo owned by Tonya LeAnn Hobbs, who was found slain Jan. 24 in Geronimo...
.

J.J. Johnson, Aja's father, said an OSBI agent visited his house just before 6 p.m. and told him two bodies had been found. The agent could not confirm that one of them was his daughter.
Watching television coverage today from the scene, however, Johnson said he saw a pink and blue jacket he'd purchased for his daughter — and knew she was dead...

Lester Hobbs, Aja Johnson's suspected abductor can survive on little money and food

LAWTON - Lester William Hobbs, 7-year-old Aja Johnson's suspected abductor, is a man who can survive in the shadows of society, investigators said during a press conference today.

Through hundreds of interviews, investigators said, they have uncovered the portrait of a drifter who can hustle money in pool halls, work on cars and sustain himself on pocket change. Now, more than a month after Aja's disappearance, they are again pleading for the public's help...

Goss revealed for the first time that investigators think Tonya was beaten to death with a hammer and that Aja likely witnessed the killing "lying by her mother's side on a sofa," inside his recreational vehicle...

Goss said his team has not received one concrete lead on Aja, Lester Hobbs or Tonya Hobbs' white 1992 Toyota Paseo, which they think Lester Hobbs was driving when he left the RV.

"Hobbs can survive on very little money 20 bucks here; 20 bucks there," Goss said. "In fact, his needs seem to be met with only cigarettes, liquor, and very little food. He is a self-taught automobile mechanic and will offer to do minor repairs for little money. He has worked in the past in small automotive garages and as a mechanic in service stations...

Investigators said Hobbs likes to change his appearance with the use of hair dyes and hair growth, but there are two physical characteristics he can't easily hide: Tattoos and a broken nose. Hobbs has the word "ROSE" tattooed across the top of the fingers of his right hand and "LOVE" tattooed across the top of the fingers of his left hand.

GERONIMO — The U.S. Marshal's Service has added its Sex Offender Investigation Unit to the search for a missing 7-year-old girl and her stepfather.

The Lawton Constitution reports that authorities have been searching for 7-year-old Aja Johnson and Lester Hobbs since Jan. 24 when Tonya Hobbs, 37, Lester Hobbs' estranged wife and the mother of the girl, was found beaten to death in a camper near Geronimo in southern Comanche County.

Law enforcement officers conducted a house-by-house search Wednesday for the missing girl...

Hobbs, 46, was charged Jan. 26 in Comanche County District Court with first-degree murder and kidnapping.

Crawford said that the Sex Offender Unit became involved in the investigation after investigators received information that Hobbs could be sexually abusing the child...

The case was mentioned briefly on Saturday's episode of America's Most Wanted television show and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was culling about 300 leads Wednesday, Jessica Brown, spokesperson, said.

Authorities in Oklahoma and across the nation are desperately searching for 7-year-old Aja Daniell Johnson after charging the man believed to have kidnapped her with the first-degree murder of her mother, Tonya Hobbs.

Lester Hobbs, Aja's stepfather, is believed to have killed Tonya Hobbs either Saturday evening or sometime Sunday...

Lester Hobbs, 46, has a long criminal history, according to the Comanche County Sheriff's Office, including several felony convictions. Aja Johnson's grandmother, Alice Dunkin, told The Oklahoman that Hobbs could be especially violent if drinking.

"He hated that little girl," she said. "I'm afraid he's already killed her." In August, Tonya Hobbs, who had become estranged from her husband, filed a court petition for a restraining order because Lester Hobbs had threatened to "hit my daughters in the head with a hammer and kill them."

Hobbs also had a 13-year-old daughter with Tonya Hobbs. That daughter was staying with relatives when Hobbs and Aja Johnson went missing. The restraining order was granted but dismissed after two weeks when neither of the Hobbs' showed up for court. But Lester Hobbs, according to Alice Dunkin, had a history of domestic abuse and had had several restraining orders issued against him.

...The Texas Department of Public Safety says Lester William Hobbs and seven year old Asa Johnson were seen this afternoon in Brady, Texas; between Austin and San Angelo. Officials believe he may be heading to Rockport, which is in far south Texas. It's only a few hours from the US-Mexico border.

.
Seven year old Aja Danielle Johnson is who police are looking for. They want to know if she is safe tonight and where she is.

.

Late last night police discovered the body of the girl's mother, Tonya Hobbs, inside an RV that she and Lester William Hobbs had been staying in with Aja Johnson. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is treating Hobbs as a person of interest and they believe he and the seven year old girl are possibly together.

.

Richard Goss with the the OSBI said, "Right now we know they were driving a 1992 Toyota Paseo. The car has been described as white in color. It should have Oklahoma license plates 577-BPW." We're told the car also has no hubcaps and the passenger side window is broken and has plastic covering it. Officials are not sure where Lester Hobbs is heading but they do have a few ideas.

Hobbs was busted for burglary in 1983 and served 5 years probation.

In 2000 he had a couple run-in's involving DUI's and resisting/alluding officers.

Then Hobbs spent time in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections from March 2003 to Jan 2005 for DUI, Assault With A Deadly Weapon and Assault &/Or Battery W/Dangerous Weapon.

.

He didn't seem to be much of a violent offender--with police, yes, but I don't really take stock of that charge because any jerk cop adds that on if the perp ticks them off.

.

He was married to Tonya (or was otherwise a couple with her) for the past 5 years. Since Aja was 2 years old. Now, I realize he probably murdered his wife Tonya, but am I too naive, thinking maybe he really won't harm Aja at all? Hope not.
